The design brief

What Design is being asked to create, and the rules it plays by

The strategy this brief serves sits one tab left (Campaign brief); every asset below renders in situ on the Live walkthrough tab. The briefing round opens after Gate 1: nothing here is in build.

The split. We hold the frame: moment, segment, trigger, channels, sequence and measurement, all decided on the tabs above. You own the experience and the words within the constraints. Every price claim is a true route-and-day figure; no discounts, no urgency, no guilt anywhere in the journey.

FigJam: in the app↗FigJam: out of the app↗

7 things to make now · 1 canvas · 3 screens · 2 data states

Three assets are deliberately gated: the results banner waits for the results event (an app release), the price comparison on the auction screen for the dwell events, and the per-case dead-end copy for the reason split. All are in the matrix with their gates named; nothing here builds ahead of its data. Paused 5 Oct 2026: the confirm screen check and the confirm-screen recovery.

The problem  The doubt strikes at the moment of commitment, and nothing answers it. The full framing and the evidence: the campaign brief.

The job to be done  “I hesitated: remove my doubt, don't punish it. Tell me what a bid commits me to, whether it covers everyone, and what happens if I lose, at the step where I am deciding.”

The question the work must answer

A customer hesitated with good reason. What should the screen, and the one message we send the day after, say so that finishing feels safe rather than chased?

What to produce
In the flow: the screen answers the doubt6 assetsThis group in FigJam ↗
Copy on surfaces Product owns, briefed through this pack so the words and the strategy stay in one place. No new surface anywhere.

BRAZE IN-APP MESSAGE (A CARD AT THE PRICE LINE)
Search results: the first search of a session, once, when the customer hesitates.
CHANGE
Replaces the one-size banner message with a card worded by customer state, shown once per session when the customer hesitates.
Route-level walk-up and from-bid figures at render; a missing figure drops the comparison line.
The priced answer at the results, by customer: walk-up First Class beside the from-bid figure.
  • New customer: nothing to pay if you don’t win, with the price
  • Returning, never bid: walk-up against from-bid, route-specific
  • Bid before: the last outcome on this route beside today’s floor (the missed-by line only where the loss was on price and the gap is known; a no-gap version otherwise)
  • Power user: no banner
  • Dead-end state is asset 6, not this one

Where the copy lives
The Live experience walkthrough, step 1
The mock copy is the direction; the walkthrough and the brief stay in step.
The job to be done
Answer is-it-actually-cheaper before the customer invests more taps.
One price message per session. No discount language anywhere. Information only, no button: the results screen already carries each train's own Place a bid, so the tap stays there. Folds into Product's results-screen redesign rather than an interim build (Sheran, 8 Oct 2026). The comparison renders only where the walk-up is above the bid floor; otherwise the plain line, Bids start at the floor.
Copy direction, not final words
Cheaper than buying First Class on the day, shown with this route's prices. Always the true figure for this route, never a rounded claim.

IN-APP (NATIVE SCREEN)
Search results on Avanti routes, the first time the class toggle shows.
CHANGE
Rewords the unpriced coachmark: a one-time affordance on the class toggle that stays native.
The from-prices per cabin at render, which the results screen already holds.
The Avanti cabin comparison priced side by side: Standard Premium and First Class, each with its from-price.

Two cabins, two prices. Both upgrade your booked seat. Nothing to pay if you don’t win.
3The price comparison on the auction screen
PHASE 2
Phase 2, gated on the dwell and cancel events
IN-APP (NATIVE SCREEN)
The auction screen (Place a Bid), once per session.
NEW
Nothing fires at the price view today, and no event records the exit or its reason.

The job to be done
Answer the price doubt in the session, before the customer leaves.
One price message per session, shared with asset 1. In-session only, never a cold chase. Folds into Product's auction-details redesign rather than an interim build (Sheran, 8 Oct 2026). The comparison renders only where the walk-up is above the bid floor; otherwise the plain line, Bids start at the floor.
Copy direction, not final words
Answer whether bidding is actually cheaper, with this route's prices: First Class on the day against the opening bid on the screen. Nothing to pay if you don’t win.
4The bid screen answers
PHASE 1
Phase 1, ships with the new Place-Bid flow
IN-APP (NATIVE SCREEN)
The Place-Bid flow on open, and the auction screen’s card.
CHANGE
The screen exists; the answers do not. The card is the auction screen’s existing marketing slot, worded at render by customer type, with no dwell trigger.
The ever-bid flag (never bid vs bid before); the winning-bid band per route.
The three stalling questions answered in the flow, plus the auction screen’s card worded by customer type.
  • The three answers, in the Place-Bid flow for everyone: the bid is per seat and a group wins together or not at all, nothing to pay if you don’t win, the minimum bid is a real bid
  • The card, never bid: the practice invitation, as today
  • The card, bid before: name the most you’d pay, with recent winning bids on the route
  • The card, power user: their saving this year, no education copy
  • The card, saved bid: waits on the saved-bid store; no message mentions a saved amount until it exists

The job to be done
Melt the commitment fear at the biggest single leak.
The answers render before any hesitation is measurable: no popup, part of the screen. Folds into Product's auction-details redesign rather than an interim build (Sheran, 8 Oct 2026). The recent-wins band renders only when its top is at or above the current opening bid; otherwise the no-band version.

The dead-end reason at fire time (phase 2); covered-route alternatives at render.
The honest dead end: the reason, a covered-route redirect, and the permission-split capture card.
  • Phase 1 interim: one generic dead-end message plus the capture card, covering all four cases honestly
  • Phase 2, when the reason split lands: too-early (watch this route), not-covered (redirect, no chase), Avanti cabin miss (never labelled not covered)

7The abandoned search
PHASE 1
Phase 1 for the next-day send; the 30-minute and two-hour sends wait on the real-time search event
Its send is on the CRM brief.
PUSH WHERE HELD, ELSE EMAIL
After the last search of an episode with no auction opened; the timing runs as a test.
NEW
Nothing recovers a search that never opened an auction.
The search event (route, date, party size, lowest opening bid, walk-up fare); the results deep link with the search restored; the Buy Upgrade Now flag.
One recovery for a search that never opened an auction: it names the route, the date and the price the customer saw, and lands on their results with the search restored.
  • Push: the route, the date, bid from the floor or the walk-up on the day
  • Email: the same subject line, the saved search, one button

PUSH WHERE HELD, ELSE EMAIL
The recovery canvas, day one after the abandon.
NEW
No day-after recovery exists for the upgrade funnel; this replaces the legacy abandonment pair’s never-bid slice after the reach audit.
The episode stamp (deepest step); route; the winning-bid band; consent read at send time; the auction close time on the episode, checked as each touch sends.
The day-one recovery: the three answers, one tap back to the auction.
  • Push: Nothing to pay if you don’t win as the title; the route and the minimum-bid line in the body (no route: the body starts at the answer)
  • Email: the three answers and the winning-bid band, the band also in the preheader, one button: Place a bid
  • Fallback: no route or no band, the same answers without them
  • Started a bid: the same answers for now; the saved-amount version waits on the saved-bid store
▸ The job, the copy and where it lives

The job to be done
Answer the question that stopped them; never just ask them back.
No discounts. Timed after the organic-return window, never inside it. No send once the auction has closed or the train has left. The recent-wins band renders only when its top is at or above the current opening bid; otherwise the no-band version.
Copy direction, not final words
Nothing to pay if you don’t win. Your bid is per seat, and your group wins together or not at all. The minimum bid is a real bid: bid it and you’re in the running. Talk about the trip, never about what the customer did.

The recovery canvas, touch 2.
NEW
Canvas branching and Liquid on asset 8: nothing new to maintain beyond the subject line.
The unseen check, in-canvas.
One more look at about 22 hours, only where the first touch went unseen: on the other channel, or again on the one channel held.
  • The same answer as asset 8, on the other channel where both are held
  • One channel held: the email again under the subject What others paid to upgrade on this route, the body unchanged; the push again unchanged, as on Journey 8

Now open: upgrades on this route. You asked us to tell you the moment upgrades opened, and they just did. Nothing to pay if you don’t win.

If it is not in this table, it is not in this round. Three assets wait on events or a release that do not exist yet and are listed so the gate is visible: the results banner, the price comparison on the auction screen and the per-case dead-end copy. Two more are paused (5 Oct 2026): the confirm screen check and the confirm-screen recovery.

Where the work is briefed: this tab is the ask; the handoff board section for this journey is built after Gate 1 (the pack wins where the two differ). The mock copy on the Live walkthrough is the direction, never the final words.
